What we investigate

The label is only the beginning.

A fibre composition can tell you important things about a garment. It doesn't necessarily tell you everything about its treatments, certifications or potential microfibre shedding considerations.

Microplastic & microfibre shedding

We examine the garment's fibre composition and consider whether it contains synthetic, plastic-based fibres associated with greater microfibre-shedding concern.

Chemical & PFAS signals

We look for relevant product claims, performance treatments and available information that may warrant closer investigation. Fibre composition alone does not establish the presence of PFAS or a specific chemical.

We don't reduce a garment to a simple "toxic" or "non-toxic" label. Instead, we use a structured assessment framework to examine different aspects of the product.

Fibre composition can provide useful information about whether a garment contains synthetic or natural fibres. It cannot, by itself, confirm the presence or absence of PFAS, dyes, finishes or other chemicals in the finished garment.
